UDX Favourite Scary Stories

by | Oct 16, 2020 | Community, Miscellaneous

Hey hey spooktober fanatics!

With the month of haunting upon us and Halloween night less than a month away, we decided to ask around the game studio (remotely) for stories that our team personally found creepy, scary or just plain unsettling.

Check out some of the UDX team’s favourite spooky stories!

Rumpelstiltskin

Rumpelstiltskin originated as a fairy tale in Germany. The story centers around a girl locked away by the King to spin straw into gold due to her father boastfully lying about her talents. Thankfully, an imp-like creature offers their help in exchange for compensation. A lot of original Brothers Grimm fairy tales have their creepy feature but the mysterious imp, Rumpelstiltskin is a notable one on the creepy scale.

The Shining

A classic horror movie from the 1980s about a family isolated in a hotel during winter where sinister forces influence the father into violence and the son experiences horrifying premonitions and apparitions. This movie didn’t have too many jump scares but it had an unsettling atmosphere that persisted throughout the family’s declining sanity.

SAW movies

Not for the faint of heart. The SAW franchise is based on a serial killer known as Jigsaw who entraps and kills their victim in elaborate death ‘games’ that range from physical to psychological torture.

Jinmenju

The Jinmenju is a strange tree yokai in Japanese supernatural folklore with human faced fruits. It’s said that none of the faces talk but are constantly laughing until they fall from the tree. This folklore has been featured in a few pop culture references today and is a bizarre but interesting read.

IT

One of the most notable Stephen King horror stories about a group of bullied kids forced to face off against a shape shifting monster preying on the children in their small town in Maine.

Dullahan

A famous Irish urban legend, also known as the headless horseman. The Dullahan is a headless rider who roams the lands of Ireland searching for victims whose lives they intend to take. There are multiple variations of this legend that continue to haunt Irish locals and travelers alike!

SandKings, George R.R. Martin

A sci-fi novelette written by George R.R. Martin about a man with a fascination for strange, dangerous and exotic pets. His most recent acquisition is a species known as Sandkings that . Personally, I was horrified just reading the summary on wikipedia.

Soul stealing dreams

Based on a popular Korean urban legend. If you have a dream of a loved one standing waist deep in water and they beckon you to come to them then, you should never accept or else the spirit will steal your soul. Try to remember this warning if you ever encounter this type of dream.

The Island of the Dolls

According to legend, the owner of the Island, Don Julian Santana Barrera found the body of a young girl drowned in the canals south of Mexico City. Soon after, the owner started experiencing supernatural phenomena. In order to protect against evil spirits, the owner would collect dolls found in the garbage or canals and hang them all over the island. Interestingly, this island allows visitation tours so that you can experience the creepy atmosphere of the dolls yourself.

Hope you enjoyed reading up on some of these interesting scary stories and folklore. Have a great rest this weekend and don’t let the bedbugs bite!
